Let Disco Take Me Home
就让迪斯科带我回家
2024, Disco balls, Wood, Arduino, Projector, Video
The disco ball symbolizes joy, vitality, and freedom, while also serving as a collective memory of an era. Through its reflected light points, the space is redefined – creating an atmosphere that, amid the party ambiance, holds an intimate closeness that subtly connects people to one another.
“Sometimes life feels like a series of disco moments.” This thought became the foundation of this work. The installation consists of three rows of disco balls driven by a wooden structure, with hundreds of projected images representing memories. These reflections pass through the surfaces, creating a light effect reminiscent of church windows on the walls.
The work cycles through three phases: Initially, the disco balls rotate at irregular speeds and directions, making the images blurry and elusive, accompanied by chaotic sounds. Then, the rotation gradually becomes uniform, allowing viewers to clearly see the memories reflected on each surface, with only gentle music remaining. Finally, the space dims, offering viewers time for solitude.
Every moment of our lives is like a tile on the disco ball. When we move forward without pause, everything becomes indistinct; it’s in moments of stillness that we can clearly see our past and reflect on what we’ve gained and lost. This work creates such a space, allowing viewers to find their own moment of pause within these recurring cycles.
